Women's Monthly Rankings: December 7th 2022

UPDATES

* The Lineal Boxing Champion monthly ratings are produced by an international panel of 10 boxing analysts. Boxers are ranked according to ability and accomplishments in their respective weight classes. Fighters may be removed if they have been inactive for over 18 months and still have no fights scheduled.

Atomweight

Ayaka Miyao (#5 last month), exits the ratings after formally announcing her retirement from boxing. Fabiana Bytyqi enters at #5.

Junior Flyweight

Yokasta Valle enters at #4, after outpointing Bermudez by 10-round majority decision on November 26. Bermudez falls to #5 and Tenkai exits.

Bantamweight

Nina Hughes enters at #4, after unanimously outpointing Jamie Mitchell on November 26th. Mitchell exits the ratings.

Featherweight

Nina Meinke enters at #5, following her win over Edoth Matthysse on November 5. Debora Dionicius, whose last fight was at junior featherweight, exits the ratings.

Junior Welterweight*

Sandy Ryan unanimously outpointed veteran, Anahi Sanchez, over 10 rounds on November 26, resulting in her climbing the ratings to #3. Bustos and Camara each drop down a place.

Junior Middleweight

Natasha Jonas defeated Marie Eve Dicaire over 10 rounds on. Incidentally, in this fight Jonas won the vacant Ring title. However, Claressa Shields remains the true, Lineal Champion at 154lbs, having beaten Dicaire in a “#1 Vs #1 match-up,” in 2021. On November 22, 2022 (Shields/Twitter), the American challenged Jonas to a fight, saying: “Tasha Jonas, if you think you can beat me…or that I lack skill wise somewhere…prove it. Let’s fight.” In response to Jonas suggesting that Shields’ boxing schedule was getting delayed by her MMA career, Shields declared: “I have at least two more fights before I pause boxing for the year. So ain’t nothing stopping a fight from being made between you and I or me and anyone else.” (November 23, Shields/Twitter).  Shields was already eyeing a return to junior middleweight, before Jonas/Dicaire had taken place, saying, “Women at 154 right now have the names and the fans, and they’re both from the UK, Natasha Jonas and Terri Harper. I think those fights would be great for the sport again.” (Keith Idec, reporting for Boxing Scene on November 11, 2022). On November 12, 2022, Boxing Scene (Cliff Rold) reported: “The winner (of Jonas/Dicaire) will be recognised by Ring Magazine as world champion though LineaBoxingChampion.com correctly still lists Shields as the rightful champion of the class.”

*Update made on December 9th, 2022

UPDATES

* The Lineal Boxing Champion monthly ratings are produced by an international panel of 10 boxing analysts. Boxers are ranked according to ability and accomplishments in their respective weight classes. Fighters may be removed if they have been inactive for over 18 months and still have no fights scheduled.

Flyweight

Arely Mucino moves to No.1 following her split decision over Leonela Yudica - the close nature of the loss, results in the experienced Argentine entering our ratings at No.5, bumping Jaqueline Calvo out. Kenia Enriquez impressed when stopping Nora Cardoza on October 28th, so climbs to No.2. Fujioka drops to No.3.

Junior Lightweight

In a battle of the best two women at Junior Lightweight, Baumgardner came out on top, defeating Mayer by 10-round split decision, to become the inaugural Lineal Champion of the division. Elhem Mekhaled fills the No.5 spot.

Welterweight

Cecilia Braekhus, whose last fight was a points loss to McCaskill in March 2021, exits the ratings. Layla McCarter moves to No.1 and Ivana Habazin (who widely outscored Diana Prazak on October 22), enters at No.2.

Heavyweight

Despite her inactivity, for the time being, Hanna Gabriels will remain our No.1 ranked Heavyweight. Gabriels had been scheduled to fight Paola Roch on August 13th in Colombia earlier this year, but the the fight got rescheduled and then cancelled. This unfortunate cancellation, combined with the general lack of competition and action in the Heavyweight divison, means Gabriels will be allowed more time before being dropped from our ratings.

Pound-for-pound Update

Shields reclaims the P4P No.1 spot following her impressive unanimous decision over KO-artist and leading rival, Savannah Marshall, in London. Although some members of our panel felt Katie Taylor deserved to hang onto the top spot, the Irishwoman and Amanda Serrano fall to No.2 and No.3 respectively. Alycia Baumgardner’s narrow points win over Mikaela Mayer to fill the Lineal Championship vacancy at 130lbs, resulted in her entering the P4P list at No.7. Mayer and Marshall have got nudged off the list, with Luna Avila re-entering at No.10.
