The Super Middleweight Division
On March 28, 1984, Murray Sutherland, with a modest record of 41-11-1, defeated Ernie Singletary to become the first internationally accepted World Champion in the 168lbs weight class. Over 30 years have passed since the Scotsman was crowned champion, but initially, boxing’s elite seemed to merely use it as a pit-stop, en-route to Light Heavyweight. In the 1990s, the likes of Roy Jones Jr., Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank, helped it gain more recognition, but it was perhaps the crowning of Lineal Champion, Joe Calzaghe, in 2006, that finally put it on an equal footing with boxing’s traditional weight classes.
2021/Current Lineage
Canelo Alvarez defeated Caleb Plant on November 6th, 2021, via 11th round TKO, to fill the Lineal vacancy - the two men were the top two junior middleweights in the world, as per the divisional ratings at the TBRB and Left Hook Boxing. Canelo entered as the reigning Ring Magazine/WBO/WBA/WBC champion The fight was also for the vacant TBRB title.
