In the 1920s the New York State Athletic Commission (1920) and National Boxing Association (1921), briefly recognised a “Junior Flyweight” division, and stipulated that the limit be 99lbs. However, by 1922 and 1929 (for the NBA and New York respectively), these organisations ceased to identify this weight class.
In 1975, within the space of 5 months of each-other, the WBC and WBA crowned their first title holders at Junior Flyweight, with 108lbs being set as the division’s limit.
Frustratingly, it wasn’t until almost 18 years later that the division’s top two rated contenders finally met (in what was also the division’s first unification fight), when Michael Carbajal defeated Humberto Gonzalez, for the inaugural Lineal Title.
2022
On November 1st, 2022, Kenshiro Teraji, knocked out Hiroto Kyoguchi in round 7 to fill the Lineal vacancy. Heading into the bout the independent ratings were as follows: TBRB (Teraji #1, Kyoguchi #2, J. Gonzalez #3), Bad Left Hook (Kyoguchi #1, Teraji #2, Gonzalez #3), ESPN (Kyoguchi #1, Gonzalez #2, Teraji #3), Ring (Kyoguchi Champion, Teraji #1, Gonzalez #2).
2024
On June 5, 2024, Boxing Scene reported that Kenshiro Teraji had vacated his WBA/WBC junior flyweight belts to move to the flyweight division.
October 13, 2024: Teraji defeated Cristofer Rosales by 11th-round TKO to win the vacant WBC flyweight belt. In the post fight press conference, Teraji stated his intention was to remain at 112lb. The Lineal Championship at 108lb became vacant.
