History

Johnny Dundee, a bit to heavy for bantamweight, but a bit too light for light weight, with the help of promoter Tex Rickard, created a weight class in between the two, and named it “junior lightweight.” Dundee claimed the championship for himself, but he did not truly legitimise his status as champion until he defeated George Chaney by 5th round foul, after being repeatedly hit low by his opponent – up until the disqualification, Jonny had been handily outboxing Chaney. Incidentally, after the victory Dundee was awarded one of Rickard’s diamond studded belts.

2022

After failing to make for his fight with Robson Conceicao on September 22, 2022, Shakur Stevenson Tweeted: “I gave it my all. I’ve been professional my whole career and made weight, but my body just can’t make 130 anymore. My health has to come first. I'm moving up to 135 in my next fight.” The Lineal Championship became vacant. Shakur officially weighed 131.5 lbs. The fight went ahead, with Stevenson having been stripped of his WBC/WBO belts - these vacant ABC titles were on the line, but only for Conceicao. Stevenson won via UD12 on September 23.
